BROOCH CLONES
Recently, two Ebay sellers, ‘Mr. Pink’ and ‘Mr. Yellow’, sold the following three brooches. They were advertised as Roman, from the classical period, and as made of silver. The dates, in the American style, indicate the date of listing. All three buyers gave a positive feedback to the sellers.
Sale dates: 8/8/05, 6//24/05 and 6/15/05
Two identical clones (using the same photograph!) sold by the same seller only 9 days apart!
Mr. Yellow and Mr. Pink also sold these two fine zoomorphic Roman brooches, also in silver-
Sale dates: 21/7/05 and 31/7/05
Clones; but from different molds?
Mr. Yellow sold these lovely ‘Byzantine’ rings-
Sale dates:6/7/05 and 5/2/05
The same ring twice by the same seller
And Mr. Pink, these lovely silver Roman horse brooches-
Sale dates: 6/16/05 and 7/27/05
The same item twice, six weeks apart.
Again Mr. Pink, silver Roman openwork brooches-
Sale dates: 6/11/05 and 6/18/05
Only a week apart!
Sale dates: 6/17/05 and 7/24/05
Again, only a week apart!
All of these objects went to different buyers, and all these objects generated excellent feedback. However, one of the buyers later told a little bird, who told us, that he found his brooch was manufactured from lead.
These ‘two’ dealers have a remarkably similar inventory that includes identical bracelets, pottery and medallions. Are ‘they’ being straight with their customers? You decide.
It would seem not unreasonable to deduce a direct relationship between the two sellers; either they are the same person or they have a supplier in common. If it were the latter, and if theses sellers, trusting the integritiy of the supplier and knowing nothing about ancient artifacts, sold one example of the item , ok, one might say that’s a mistake. But here is evidence that both sellers sell and then sell again, identical items, usung the same photograph and as closely spaced as a week!
The conclusion one draws is that both sellers are:
1. Having items rapidly returned to them as unsatisfactory and then relisting them. OR 2. Knowingly committing fraud. The fact that they sell identical things so closely in time suggests that it is their experience that buyers do not come back to look at their listings again
I have asked sellers who have done this and the reply is usually... "oh the guy didn't pay so I listed it again". What? after leaving each other positive feedback??? And I've actually emailed one of the the buyers...who more realistically said that he sent it back because it was a fake!
Update
In mid-September a Mr. Blue sold this Silver Roman Brooch
Looks sort of familiar :o)
The eagle returns! 21st March 2006 And he has drawn the seller's attention to this page.
