Fakes of this group of shabtis were made some years ago of such quality that they fooled several respectable museums.  They are fairly widespread and probably outnumber the genuine pieces by a considerable amount.  Microscopic examination is usually necessary to be certain with these pieces.  Buyers should be extremely careful, not least considering the substantial price tags involved, and dealers are advised to steer clear because of the difficulty in re-selling even genuine pieces.

Yes, and here is one

If you need confirmatory proof look inside!

I'm certainly not happy with this one either. Compare them.

Another!

I bought this fake Khamwaset especially to show here on the website.

It has many mistakes. I don’t wish to pubish  a detailed analysis of what betrays it as fake as one doesn’t want to unintentionally educate the fakers!

However the external faience layer is too thin and the colour variations in the faience too great. The discolouration is not natural. There is a serious error in the shape of part of this fake shabti.  The glyphs are too badly done for shabti of such an important person.

Additional information with thanks to Dik and Rijksmuseum van Oudheden.

These shabtis must grow on trees in Spain,I went to the antiquities dealers at the Passeig del Gracia and saw about 20 of these, added to the dozens I already saw in Brussels says enough, buy with caution

     From Melchior

Check "Boscher Studer Fromentin" , an auction in

Paris . There you can find dozens of similar faience Ramesside

shabtis . I recomend to search old catalogues from : www.auction.fr or www.gazette-drouot.com

This one actually sold as a reproduction, not as the genuine thing.

The famous Khaemwaset fake ushabtis call for a few pics of genuine Khaemwasets .

These are in The Louvre
