REAL or FAKE:>>Fake ancient glass>>fake core formed glass 3

10th February 2008

Unfortunatley the standard of fake core formed glass on the market, especially on eBay has become rather better over the last coule of years.

Some are beong made in a workshop in Italy but most of it  comes  from Damascus.

Lets just stick with the two handled amphoriskos form.

Which are the two genuine pieces  here?

Whereas you will hopefully be able to discount several right away, another couple may wel pose a challenge.

Let's look at a fake more closely.

And this one?

This orange colour doesn't exist in ancient core formed glass. Also the vessel is too squat and the feathering too rigid and not natural at all.

Compare with a close up of a genune piece.

If you are going to buy such a piece ask your seller to point you to parallels in the major reference works: If he canot, then how does he know it's genuine?

Fake core formed glass often comes along with a very  fine covering of a white substance.

Genuine pieces can aslo show  a white surface erosion but it is generally does not come off merely by rubbing with one's finger recealing pefectly pristine  smooth glass underneath.
