An interesting Roman lead weight with Greek inscription. This weight is typical for late Hellenistic to Roman weights from the Near East. The inscription usually gives the name of an official (agoranomos) and/or a dealer, sometimes the year and the weight of course.
There are several endings of names in genitive case (OU). The top says AGORA, something seems to be missing, it will be agoranomou and a name, so (weight) of the market official xxx. In line 3 you see the name (E)rmolaou or (A)rmolaou or (Xa)rmolaou (in genitive case), may be a second name of the official or the name of his father, so (weight) of the market official xxx, (son) of (E/A/Xa)rmolaos. The remaining lines are hard to decipher. .......................................................................................................................... 86 mm long. Weight, 171.7 g 1st cen BC - 1st cen AD |
