A very attractive Old Babylonian haematite duck weight

Weighs 8.31g so it is 2/3 of a shekel based on the 8.31 shekel weight.

Intact.

18mm

The haematite weights  can be placed fairly accurately within a 400 year time span.

Hematite which is widely found in Syria and Turkey must have been imported into Mesopotamia where stone of this kind is not available.

Weights in haematite were introduced during the Old Babylonian period and were not made outside this time.

They were made up until Neo Babylonian times but after about 1600 BC they were made in black stone which was not haematite.

Old Babylonian Circa 1900-1600 BC
