The seller  declares:

You are bidding on an extremely attractive Roman Mosaic depicting a Gladiatorial Contest, dating to 300 AD!

Restored and reconstituted from ancient tesarae fragments and ancient tessarae.

This mosaic has been admired by a number of specialists whilst in our collection. The vast majority believe it to be Roman dating to 300 AD. A small number believe it to be 18th or 19th century, ie post Renaissance. The post Renaissance was a period when classical art was immitated extensively, often to a higher standard than the original works! Mosaic artists of this period used to make up mosaics from genuine ancient tessarae found at ancient Roman sites.

Provenance: Formerly in a private English collection.

Appraisal: $8,800.

Good Luck with this Masterpiece "once only" NO RESERVE auction!

We only sell genuine guaranteed ancient art. Please show to an expert for peace of mind.

A very good suggestion!

A  stunning 160 sq. m. mosaic Roman floor in Perl-Nennig in a 3rd1874 and fully restored in 1960.

One can buy exact replicas of some famous Roman mosaics: good ones are understandably expensive. This fairly good copy uses tesserae which are rather larger than used with the original.

The seller writes:

None of these senior specialists recognised this and the other above, as being what they are, copies of very well known mosaics???
