A good example of this type of Redware lamp produced in Roman North Africa and bearing the famous emblem first used by the Roman emperor Constantine The Great; the Chi Rho monogram.

This is one of the earliest forms of  the christogram:  it is formed by superimposing the first two letters in the Greek spelling of the word Christ "Χριστός" . Interestingly  The Chi-Rho symbol was also used by Greek scribes to mark, in the margin, a particularly  interesting part of the text ; the combined letters Chi and Rho standing for chrēston, meaning "good."

Intact. Small surface chip at 4 o'clock as you can see.

133mm.

Roman North Africa, late 4th /early 5th century.

Price: sold GBP
