Indus Valley Culture statuette from Mehrgarh, Pakistan. Terracotta statuette of a naked and a stylized female (presumed to be a mother goddess though due to difficulty in conclusively identifying these figurines with the “mother goddess”, many scholars prefer using the term “female figurines with likely cultic significance.” ) 120mm In very fine condition though left armand right hand re-attached. The oldest ceramic figurines in South Asia were found at Mehrgarh. They have been found in all phases of the settlement and appear even before the local pottery appears. The earliest figurines are quite simple and do not show intricate features. However, they grow in sophistication with time and by 4000 BC begin to show their characteristic hairstyles and typical prominent breasts.Merhghrh is one of the most important Neolithic. It lies on the Kacchi Plain of Balochistan, Pakistan. It is one of the earliest sites with evidence of farming and herding in South Asia. From an Australian collection acquired in Australia 25 years ago. Mehrgarh, Period VII, c. 2800-2600 BC These are very widely faked and the majority one sees on eBay are modern. |
